Kentucky Lake Fishing Guide

February 2nd, 2011

The lake level is about at winter pool and water clarity ranges from stained in the main river channel to clear in the bays. Some ice still in the back of the bays but overall the lake is thawing out and basically ice-free.

Fishing Report …
Overall fishing is slow but not impossible.  Reports of some Sauger and Stripes are being caught below Kentucky Dam and at Smithland Pool and a few bass and crappie near the canal.  I fished Saturday in a wonderful sunshine and cast a jerkbait until my arm fell off and never got a bite!  The good news is the surface water temp was a surprising 44 degrees which bodes well for things to come.  It will happen … and soon so sharpen your hooks and get ready.

Premier Twist-It Floats - a Pan Fisherman’s Dream Come True!
When Ken McGregor, at The Fisherman’s Friend in Lake City, KY (270-362-4323) handed me one of these floats I knew right away it was the answer to my bobber issues.  The design of this float lets you switch from a slip bobber to a grip bobber with the simple twist of the bobber's cap. These floats are a pan fisherman’s dream come true. Use it as a slip float and then with a simple twist the float tightens onto the line and becomes a fixed float.  No reason to carry two rods, one rigged with a slip float for suspending minnows, and another rigged with a tube jig under a fixed bobber, or even worse, tear one rig down to convert it to the other.  The floats are highly visible and easy to use. See the friendly Folks at the Fisherman’s Friend they’ll fix you up!
