Kentucky Lake Fishing Guide

June 10th 2010

The lake level is a half a foot above summer pool and the base water temp at KY Dam is 80 degrees.  In some of the bays the temps are in the low 80’s.  The lake is clear.

The Weather Outlook is for warmer temps with highs in the high 80’s and a chance of thunderstorms each day.

Weekly Highlights

“Last minute phone call nets big catch” Dan Fiscus of Sumner, Il. called late one evening looking to put together a bluegill trip for he and his wife Kathy.  Having a night fishing trip planned for the following day, I figured we could still do a trip early that morning.  The Solunar Tables showed that the prime feeding times would be we made plans to meet early and fish till mid-morning.  You know it’s going to be a good day when everyone catches a fish on their first cast.  Over the next hour and a half Dan, Kathy and I experienced non-stop action catching bluegill, redear and perch on a black Shelton’s bluegill bug … with and without a cricket.  Kathy was one of the better female anglers I’ve seen in a while and matched Dan and I cast-for-cast and, she baited her own hook to boot!  I had a great time with Dan & Kathy and I was real glad I got that late evening call.  Thanks for a fun morning!

“Mother & Son bond over day spent fishing”
Mindy Kleine of St.Charles, Mo. didn’t catch the big one but she didn’t care.  Spending the day fishing with her son Will made her the big winner.  While they both caught a good number of bass, Will caught the big bass of the day, a 5 lb 9 oz. largemouth on a shakey head.  Will learned a little bit about finding shell beds, reading and interpreting electronics and tying the double uni-knot while Mindy got in the groove casting and setting the hook using a spinning rod.  Nothing brings a family closer together than spending a day on Kentucky Lake fishing.  It’s great to see a mother and son have such a close relationship.  I was glad that they decided to share their day with Kick’n Bass.

“If you want to become a better angler read this …”

Martin Rowe and Mark Reed (photo) caught these post-spawn bass on the ledges fishing a shakeyhead.   This is what they had to say about their time on the water with Kick’n Bass.

I never had fished for bass on Kentucky Lake before.  I was very pleased with the amount of patience and instruction I received.  By the end of the day I was “Kick’n Bass”!  - Martin Rowe

Until today, I had never fished a shakey head.  I wasn’t' exactly sure what to expect but everything was provided; the rod & reel, lure and the how too.  By the end of the day, I had a pretty good handle on how and where to find and catch bass on the shakeyhead.  Martin and I caught a lot of fish including my biggest bass ever!  The trip was awesome. - Mark Reed

Let Kick’n Bass Guide Service help you master the art of fishing the Shakey Head.  No doubt this technique is one of the most productive ways to catch both smallmouth and largemouth bass. Until recently fishing a Shakey Head has been a guarded secret of the touring pros. A number of pros swear by it and say it works anywhere, anytime and a number of major bass tournaments have been won using this method.  Shaky Head fishing works especially well for rocky bottoms and it can be fished around the edges of thicker cover and in shallow and deep water alike.  With the spawn over, the big females are hungry and aggressive and can be found in large schools.  June & July are prime times for Shakey Head fishing here on Kentucky Lake.

If you want to “catch more fish and have fun” contact Kick’n Bass and schedule your day on the water learning to fish the shakey head.  Equipment furnished or bring your own.  Email rk@kicknbass.net and book your trip today.

Current Generation and Prime Feeding Times … All species, especially bass on the ledges, respond favorably to current this time of year.  The amount of current in the lake varies according to the TVA Water Release schedule.  Successful anglers take into consideration the prime feeding times and the TVA Water Release Schedule.  Being at your favorite fishing hole during these times will increase your odds of success.  Click on this website for the prime feeding times in your area http://www.solunarforecast.com/solunarcalendar.aspx the zip code for Kentucky Lake is 42044. Below is the website for the TVA Water Release Schedule for Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley.

Fishing Report

Largemouth Bass:  WOW! Bass are being caught in a lot of locations on the lake.  Keith & Bob Perry (photo-L) from Missouri and I had a dream day on big fish on secondary points which in general are holding a lot of fish. Also the main lake ledges are producing some really fantastic catches.  This week my clients have caught a lot of quality fish.  Most days we are catching several four & five pounders but this week has been exceptional with two fish over 7 pounds.  We’ve tried a lot of lures this week and have caught fish on most of them but the most productive ones have been a jig and a Shakeyhead.  The jig combo consists of a Tiny Paca Craw and a one quarter or one half ounce PJ’s football head jig.  Dragging this lure seems to produce the best results and the unique shape of the PJ’s jig resists getting hung up especially when fishing around shell beds and heavy cover. Shakeyheads have been catching a ton of fish.  Both 7 pounders were caught on the Shakeyhead with the Strike King June bug & Blue Moon Finesse being the best colors fished on a 3/16 oz PJ’s football head jig.  Crankbaits in Sexy shad and Royal shad have been catching their share of fish on the long sloping points close to the secondary channels, especially if the points are located in the mouth of the bays. In the back of the bays, Rat-L-Trap type baits are catching some fish but they are smaller.  The top water bite has been pretty good on shad colored Rapala Skitter Props but my clients and I have had such good success fishing deep that we just can’t get interested in the top water bite.  Either way Largemouth Bass fishing on Kentucky Lake is HOT!!!

Smallmouth Bass: are being caught offshore on submerged rock piles and shell beds on Tiny Paca Craws and dragging an Eakins football head jig.  Most fish are being caught in 10’-12’ deep. Best color for the jig has been the Missouri Craw by Eakins.  Some really nice smallmouth have been caught on a 3/16 oz. PJ’s football head jig head with a green pumpkin tiny Paca Craw trailer with the craws dipped in chartreuse dye.

Bluegill & Redear: The bluegill fishing is still very good.  Some Redear are showing up. Best lures again were the Sheltons Bluegill Bug in Black & Cricket.  Our best success has been alternating fishing the bug straight up and then tipping it either with a cricket or a wax worm.

Crappie:  Crappie fishing is getting better.  Good numbers of Crappie are being caught over brush 15’-20’ deep over brush.  A minnow is the bait of choice.

Catfish:  Excellent on the banks 4 – 8 feet deep using any type of live bait.

Stripes: are being caught in the mouths of the bays in 8 – 18 feet of water.  Trolling a Ken’s rig has been a killer on white bass and at times we have caught a fish on both baits. The Ken’s rig resembles a spinner bait without the hook and blade. Instead, a ball bearing swivel is attached where the hook and blade would be.  Monofilament leaders of different lengths are attached to the swivels with the top leader about 30” and the bottom about 18 inches.  A white rooster tail spinner is tied to the top leader and a deep diving crank bait on the bottom.  I snip off the middle hook on the front treble to reduce hang ups and troll at idle speed in the mouth of the bays in 8’ -18’ feet of water.  This rig gets down deep where the fish are less susceptible to inclement weather conditions.  Also some jump activity is being reported on the main lake and at the mouth of the bays.  Those fish are being caught casting Ľ oz white rooster tails.
