Kentucky Lake Fishing Guide

June 4th 2010

Lake Level, Water Temp & Weather Outlook:

The lake level is a half a foot above summer pool and the base water temp at KY Dam is 80 degrees.  In some of the bays the temps are in the low 80’s. Remember, it’s the base water temps in the main lake that move the majority of the fish, not necessarily the surface water temps in the bays which can fluctuate daily.  With the hot weather we’ve had this week the lake temps are getting close to normal for this time of year.

The Weather Outlook is for warmer temps with highs in the upper 80’s to low 90’s with a chance of thunderstorms each day.  Overall the weather outlook is favorable for fishing but remember to drink plenty of fluids when you’re out on the water.

Weekly Highlights

“Kick’n Bass Big Fish of the Week”
Congratulations to Tom Ostoff of Aurora, Ky (photo-L) who caught this 6lb 8 oz. post spawn female ledge fishing a jig.  Now that the spawn is over the huge females are on the prowl and can be caught in a variety of ways.  Carolina rigged lizards, deep diving crank baits, ˝ oz jigs and shakeyheads are all catching fish right now.  Get ready for some of the best bass fishing of the year.  Todd  McKee (photo-R) caught his biggest Redear ever panfishing with Kick’n Bass.  Way to go and congratulations Todd!

“Hoosier boys catch bass and more bass”
Charlie Garrison and Matt Tucker (photo-L) came to Kentucky Lake to catch some bass … and catch them they did!  The number of bass caught was extraordinary and some really good ones were caught too!  Charlie (photo-R) caught the big fish of the day, a post spawn female.  The fish were caught on a shakeyhead or a tiny Paca Craw.  Way to go guys, you caught a lot of fish and learned to fish the shakey head to boot!  Yeah!

“If you want to become a better angler read this …”
Let Kick’n Bass Guide Service help you master the art of fishing the Shakey Head.  No doubt this technique is one of the most productive ways to catch both smallmouth and largemouth bass. Until recently fishing a Shaky Head has been a guarded secret of the touring pros. A number of pros swear by it and say it works anywhere, anytime and a number of major bass tournaments have been won using this method.  Shaky Head fishing works especially well for rocky bottoms and it can be fished around the edges of thicker cover and in shallow and deep water alike.  June & July are prime times for Shakey Head fishing here on Kentucky Lake.  With the spawn over, the big females are hungry and aggressive and can be found in large schools.

This week, Luther Sellers (photo) from St. Genevieve, Mo. caught these post-spawn bass fishing a shakeyhead.  Luther is one of the many anglers that added the Shakey Head to his arsenal.  This is what he had to say about his time on the water with Kick’n Bass … Learning how to find bass on offshore structure and catching them on a shakeyhead was awesome “!  Using braided line and a fluorocarbon leader was new to me.  I could really feel the fish take the bait and getting a solid hook set, I rarely lost a fish.  This was a great learning experience for me.  Everything was provided; the rod & reel, lure and the how too.  By the end of the day I had a pretty good handle on how and where to find and catch bass on the shakeyhead.

If you want to “catch more fish and have fun” contact Kick’n Bass and schedule your day on the water learning to fish the shakey head.  Equipment furnished or bring your own.  Email rk@kicknbass.net and book your trip today.

Current Generation and Prime Feeding Times … On most days this summer TVA will be running three or more generators continuously producing a significant amount of current in the lake.  All species, especially bass on the ledges, respond favorably to current this time of year.  Pay special attention to the prime feeding times according to the Solunar tables.  Being at your favorite fishing hole during these times will increase your odds of success.  Click on this website for the feeding times in your area http://www.solunarforecast.com/solunarcalendar.aspx the zip code for Kentucky Lake is 42044

Night Fishing … night fishing has been very productive.  Last night Mark and Troy Medvick from Illinois and I caught some nice fish including one largemouth over seven pounds. For more information on night fishing trips send me an email rk@kicknbass.net or call me at 270-703-6133 and let’s put together a trip.

Largemouth Bass:  The overall numbers have been phenomenal and some big post spawn females are showing up.  Secondary points close to the main lake are holding a lot of fish.  Find a secondary point close to the main that has a bay next to it and you might be pleasantly surprised.  Some quality fish are beginning to show up on the main lake ledges.  So if you concentrate on the secondary points in the mouths of the bays and the main lake ledges you should do pretty well.

A lot of different lures are catching fish but some of the more productive ones for my clients and me have been a Tiny Paca Craw fished on a Ľ oz PJ’s football head jig.  Dragging this lure seems to produce the best results and the unique shape of the PJ’s jig resists getting hung up especially when fishing around shell beds and heavy cover. Shakeyheads have been catching a ton of fish for my customers with the Strike King June bug & Blue Moon Finesse worms seem to be the best color.  The Shakeyheads are being fished on a 3/16 oz PJ’s football head jig.
Crankbaits in Sexy shad and Royal shad have been catching their share of fish on the points. In the back of the bays Rat-L-Trap type baits are catching fish but they are smaller.  Either way Largemouth Bass fishing on Kentucky Lake is HOT!!!

Smallmouth Bass is pretty much the same as last week.  They are being caught offshore on submerged rock piles and shell beds on Tiny Paca Craws and dragging a Eakins football head jig.  Most fish are being caught in 10’-12’ deep. Best color for the jig has been the Missouri Craw by Eakins.  Some really nice smallmouth have been caught on a 3/16 oz. PJ’s football head jig head with a green pumpkin tiny Paca Craw trailer with the craws dipped in chartreuse dye.  Check out how to set this combo up on this weeks video fishing tip http://www.kentuckylake.tv/fishing/kentucky-lake-fishing-tip-2010-05-27.htm

Bluegill & Redear: The bluegill fishing is still very good.  Some Redear are showing up. This week brothers Todd & Terry McKee and I caught as many bluegill as we wanted and some were huge.  Best lures again were the Sheltons Bluegill Bug in Black & Cricket.  Crickets fished on a slip float produced a good many fish too.  Your best bet is to be prepared to alternate between the Shelton’s bugs and the slip float.  When they quit hitting one, switch to the other and you can also throw the Shelton’s bug tipped with a cricket, wax worm, etc.  Remember to be flexible and prepared and you’ll load the boat.  To find the hot spots look for brown gravel banks in the back of the coves.

Crappie:  Crappie fishing is getting better.  Good numbers of Crappie are being caught over stake beds in the bays by some anglers using 10’ fiberglass poles with jigs and minnows.  Look for the stake beds in the back of coves that are marked with white PVC Pipe.  Don’t laugh, some BIG crappie have come off these man made structures this week.  Mostly these are white crappie.  Some black crappie are being caught near the spawning flats and around boat docks casting curly tails.  Best color this week has been Kentucky Green fished on a 3/32 oz green lead head.

Catfish:  Excellent on the banks 4 – 8 feet deep using any type of live bait.

Stripes:  Pretty much the same as last week although the size seems to be improving.  Stripes are being caught in the mouths of the bays in 8 – 18 feet of water.  Trolling a Ken’s rig has been a killer on white bass and at times we have caught a fish on both baits. The Ken’s rig resembles a spinner bait without the hook and blade. Instead, a ball bearing swivel is attached where the hook and blade would be.  Monofilament leaders of different lengths are attached to the swivels with the top leader about 30” and the bottom about 18 inches.  A white rooster tail spinner is tied to the top leader and a deep diving crank bait on the bottom.  I snip off the middle hook on the front treble to reduce hang ups and troll at idle speed in the mouth of the bays in 8’ -18’ feet of water.  This rig gets down deep where the fish are less susceptible to inclement weather conditions.  Also some jump activity is being reported on the main lake and at the mouth of the bays.  Those fish are being caught casting Ľ oz white rooster tails.
