Lake Level, Water Temp & Weather Outlook:
The lake level is right at summer pool and the
base water temp at KY Dam is 73 degrees.
In some of the bays the temps are in the high 70’s. Remember,
it’s the base water temps in the main lake that move the
majority of the fish, not necessarily the surface water temps in
the bays which can fluctuate daily. No doubt the high
water and below normal water temps (normal 76 degrees) will have
some species spawning into June.
The Weather Outlook is for warm temps with a
chance of thunderstorms. Overall the weather outlook is
favorable for fishing on the lakes.
Weekly Highlights
“Kick’n
Bass and “The Sports Nuts” radio show!
“The Sports Nuts” radio show on ESPN affiliate WTTL – AM 1310 in
Madisonville, Ky with Darren Jordan and Tom Rodgers, broadcasted
their final show of the year from Bee Spring Lodge on Kentucky
Lake. Guest panelists were Chris Onnybecker, of Bee Spring
Lodge, former UK football player and professional angler Ray
Barga, former Paducah Tilghman coach and Ky. High School Hall
of Famer Barney Thweat and Kick’n Bass Guide Service. The
focus of the show was mostly about fishing and promoting the
Kentucky lake area with a little humor and sports trivia mixed
in. The show was fun to do and it was good to let folks
know about the wonderful fishery and good guides we have on
Kentucky Lake. Darren & Tom do a great job and I think
they really enjoyed doing the show from Kentucky Lake.
“Thunderstorm
Bluegill” For those of us that were out on
Kentucky lake Thursday afternoon between 3:15 – 4:20 PM we got
to see what mother nature can do when she struts her stuff.
Jack and John Stanley and John Rollins (photo) and I
were enjoying a great day of bluegill fishing on Kentucky Lake
when the storm hit and cut our trip short. Wind gusts of
sixty miles per hour and huge waves wreaked havoc with several
docks and Marinas in the area. As quickly as the storm
came up it was gone. Since we were blown off our bluegill
beds we decided to fish for bass. Fishing was hot and I
mean real hot. In just a few short minutes we all caught
several bass before another thunderstorm forced us off the lake.
None the less we had a great time. Remember Kentucky Lake
is a big body of water and powerful thunderstorms are frequent
this time of year so be vigilant and watch the weather report.
“If
you want to become a better angler read on …” Let
Kick’n Bass Guide Service help you master the art of fishing the
Shakey Head. No doubt this technique is one of the most
productive ways to catch both smallmouth and largemouth bass.
Until recently fishing a Shaky Head has been a guarded secret of
the touring pros. A number of pros that swear by it and say it
works anywhere, anytime and a number of major bass tournaments
have been won using this method. Shaky Head fishing works
especially well for rocky bottoms and it can be fished around
the edges of thicker cover and in shallow and deep water alike.
June & July are prime times for Shakey Head fishing here on
Kentucky Lake. With the spawn over the big females are
hungry and aggressive and can be found in large schools.
Kenny Dement (photo) from Sikeston, Mo. caught these
post-spawn bass on back–to-back casts fishing a shakeyhead.
Kenny is one of the many anglers that added the Shakey Head to
his arsenal. This is what he had to say about his time on
the water with Kick’n Bass … “Not only did I have fun and catch
fish, I received on the water coaching that has helped me become
a better angler!” If you want to “catch more fish and have fun”

Fishing Report
Blugill & Redear: The bluegill fishing is still
red hot all over the lake. Redear fishing, while still
fair, it is taking a back seat to the huge ‘gills that are being
caught. This week my clients and I caught as many as we
wanted and they were huge. Best lures again were the
Sheltons Bluegill Bug in Black & Cricket. Crickets fished
on a slip float produced a good many fish too. Your best
bet is to be prepared to alternate between the Shelton’s bugs
and the slip float. When they quit hitting one, switch to
the other and you can also throw the Shelton’s bug tipped with a
cricket, wax worm, etc. Remember to be flexible and
prepared and you’ll load the boat. To find the hot spots
look for brown gravel banks in the back of the coves.
Crappie: Crappie fishing is improving.
Good numbers of Crappie are being caught over brush in the bays
by some anglers who are spider rigging with jigs and minnows.
Some black crappie are being caught near the spawning flats
casting curly tails. Best color this week has been
Kentucky Green fished on a 3/32 oz lead head.
Largemouth Bass: The overall numbers have
been phenomenal and are being caught in many areas of the lake.
Main lake and secondary points as well as ledges in the mouths
of the creeks and bays are all holding fish. 10” Berkley
Blue Fleck Power worms as well as green pumpkin lizards have
been especially effective on the ledges. Crankbaits in
Sexy shad and Royal shad have been catching their share of good
fish on the points. Some good fish are being caught in the back
of the bays on Rat-L-Trap type baits. Plenty of keeper fish and
fish in the 4-6 lb range are showing up too. Shakeyheads
have been catching a ton of fish for my customers with the
Strike King June bug & Blue Moon Finesse worms being the best
colors. Largemouth Bass fishing on Kentucky Lake is HOT!!!
Smallmouth Bass are being caught offshore on
submerged rock piles and shell beds on Tiny Paca Craws and
dragging a Eakins football head jig. Most fish are being
caught in 10’-12’ deep. Best color for the jig has been the
Missouri Craw by Eakins. Some really nice smallmouth have
been caught on a 3/16 oz. PJ’s football head jig head with a
green pumpkin tiny Paca Craw trailer with the craws dipped in
chartreuse dye. See how to set this combo up on the this weeks

Catfish: Excellent on the banks 4 – 8
feet deep using any type of live bait.
Stripes:
Are beginning to show up on ledges in the mouths of the bays in
8 – 18 feet of water. Trolling a Ken’s rig has been a
killer on white bass and at times we have caught a fish on both
baits. The Ken’s rig resembles a spinner bait without the hook
and blade. Instead, a ball bearing swivel is attached where the
hook and blade would be. Monofilament leaders of different
lengths are attached to the swivels with the top leader about
30” and the bottom about 18 inches. A white rooster tail
spinner is tied to the top leader and a deep diving crank bait
on the bottom. I snip off the middle hook on the front
treble to reduce hang ups and troll at idle speed in the mouth
of the bays in 8’ -18’ feet of water. This rig gets down
deep where the fish are less susceptible to inclement weather
conditions. Stripes are fun to catch and good to eat too !
