The fishing here on Kentucky Lake has been fair to good this
week. The deep bite is starting to become much better and more
consistent. The bass are starting to bunch up and I have found
most of my bigger bass holding in 8 to 15 feet of water. And in
these same areas the bass have been schooling big time, and some
of these bass are in the 4 to 5 pound range. The best places for
me have been humps, points, ridges, and roadbeds.
Your electronics will play a big key as to how successful your
day on the water will be, watch for balls of shad and bass
stacked up on the screen. To catch these deep bass I have been
using a 3/16 oz. Skakeyhead with a Strike King finesse worm in
green pumpkin and on my Carolina Rig I am using a 3 to 4 foot
leader, and a 1 oz. weight. Dragging behind it on a 3/0 hook
will be a Super Fluke or a Baby Brush Hog, my best colors have
been Watermelon and Watermelon Candy.
You can play with different variations of speed during your
cast, they seem to hit it best moving it slowly. The bite has
been somewhat light so it is not easy to tell when you get a
bite. Shallow water is still producing some good fish, the bass
have been stacking up along the points and in the back of the
bays. The best depths have been 2 to 4 feet. If you like top
water or vibrating bait fishing the bass have been very
aggressive. My best lures have been a Rapala Skitter Prop in
shad color and a Excalibur X50 vibrating bait in Royal Shad.
Monday, in four hours, we had a great trip right before the
front. We put 27 bass in the boat with two smallmouth over 18
inches that put up a great fight. More than half of these bass
came on the Skakeyhead and the rest early on the Excalibur X50
in Royal Shad. Good places to try right now are the backs of
bays and secondary points at the mouth of the major bays. These
areas always produce good bass this time of the year.
I always look forward to this time of the year. The big bass are
starting to turn on and it is a great time to be on the water.
Crappie and Stripe fishing is good when you can find them. Last
Friday we had a limit on crappie casting jigs in 6 feet of water
over stake beds but with the water being drawn down the fish are
becoming scattered. Crappie fishing has been challenging but not
impossible. Trolling Ken's rigs for Stripes has been very good
and a great "Plan B" when the bite is slow on other species.
If you would like to book a trip and get in one some great fall
fishing you can reach me at (270)703-6133.
