Lake Conditions
Lake Levels …
As of this morning both lakes are very close to summer pool give
or take a few inches due to the heavy rains down south. Expect
TVA to siphon off this water as soon as the lake crests.
Water Clarity … The water on both Lakes is in
great shape for fishing.
Water Temps … Surface temps on both lakes are
in the mid to high 70’s.

Fishing Report
WIND, WIND, & MORE
WIND! Four days in a row a cool
North wind has blown unmercifully, reminiscent of March instead
of September. This weather system has brought about cooler
surface temps. Cooler water and rising lake levels appear to
have stirred a movement of baitfish toward shallow flats and
backs of bays. In some cases early fall fishing patterns have
started.
Main Lake … Main Lake ledges and shell
beds are continuing to produce but have been difficult to fish
during high winds. The two best methods we found to catch bass
on the spots was to drag a 5/8 or ¾ oz Ledge Grouser in Kick’n
Bass color with a 7 “ ZMan Saw Tail Worm or drag a Shakey Head.
The color of worm didn’t seem to matter much with the Ledge
Grouser. However, the most consistent Shakey Head worms this
week have been Coppertruese for an early morning or night bite,
ditto that for water that has some color in it. New Money and
Pumpkin Green Flake have been real good in clearer water and
during bright conditions. Overcast Conditions or Sunny skies
seem to increase the need to have the proper color choice. The
best overall Shakey Head jig is PJ’s Bass Extractor in 3/16 oz.
Shallow water bite ...
Lots of baitfish are moving shallow both along the gravel banks
in the bays and on the main lake. If you catch the bass feeding
you can do real well and catch some good ones too! We’ve used a
1-2-3 punch to make the most of the bite. Try a swimbait like a
ZMan Scented PaddlerZ to catch some schooling fish that are
chasing shad. The best color is one that mimics a shad and we
fished them on ¼ or 3/16 oz 5/0 lead head. Another top producer
has been the Steel Shad in Silver when it’s sunny and gold when
it’s cloudy. This combo has been absolutely deadly on bass
chasing shad on the points as well as in the jumps. Shakey Heads
with Zman 7” Finesse WormZ have allowed us to extend the bite.
Several colors of worms have produced but the degree of success
depends on choosing the optimum color based on the water clarity
and amount of daylight. With a lake rise in progress, the water
levels and water clarity is changing and you must adjust you
lure choice accordingly. The exposed banks are subject to wind
and waves which can add color to the water.
Crank baits have been fair at times but right now the Swim
Baits, Steel Shad blade baits and Shakey Heads are the most
consistent producers for Kick’n Bass clients.
Experience the Thrill of
Bass Fishing at Night ...
Our night fishing season is in full swing. The same lures you
use during the day are very productive and the best spots during
the day can be even better at night. There is just something
about catching a really big bass at night that really turns a
fisherman on! For more information on putting together a night
fishing trip send me an email. We have openings on Sept
12 & 13 for night fishing. email:

Crappie …
Although we didn’t get to fish for Crappie as much as I’d like
this week, when we did it we were rewarded with some pretty nice
fish, both black and white crappie. The wind problems this week
forced us to fish the lee side of the bays where we caught
crappie fishing vertically over brush 15 -20 feet deep either on
a minnow or jig and minnow. We’ve been seeing a lot of crappie
on our Lowrance HDS units lately and if you spend a little time
working submerged cover you’ll catch a pretty good mess.
September is a good month for crappie fishing here on Kentucky
Lake. Once the schools of shad begin moving toward the shallow
flats crappie action will improve significantly. Stake beds and
submerged brush in 10-12 feet will be staging areas and the fish
will go even shallower as the water temps drop. Sharpen your
hooks and get your rods ready, it looks like we’re going to have
some real good crappie action this fall!
White Bass, Catfish, & Bluegill …
Fishing for bass and crappie most of the week didn’t leave much
time for other species but I do know that the White Bass fishing
has been pretty fair. I ran into several anglers at the
cleaning station when we were dressing our crappie that had a
limit of really nice white bass they caught trolling or casting
Ken’s Hybrid spinners. A couple were in the 15 – 16 inch class
and by the looks of their overall catch the white bass fishing
was pretty darn good for not only numbers but size too!
Sonar Tip of
the Week
The screen shows white bass feeding on
baitfish. White Bass will appear on your HDS screen as vertical
lines. In this case the whites are positioned under the
baitfish and on a flat located at the mouth of a bay. Note some
of the baitfish appear as streaks as they trying to evade the
white bass. We used a Steel Shad blade bait to catch several
nice fish before the school got wise and moved on. With out the
aid of our electronics, locating and catching these fish would
not have been possible.
Kick’n Bass can help
you get more out of your electronics and become a better
fisherman. Here’s just some of what Kick’n Bass can do to make
your units more user friendly and in turn help you become a more
productive angler …
- Make sure your HDS unit(s) has the correct
settings for the type of fishing you do. In a lot of cases
the units are set for “general use” not specific.
- Install the overlay data on the screen that you
want. Example: Depth, Water Temp, Time, etc.
- Arrange the screens so they display what you
want them to show and make going from page to page orderly
and non-confusing.
- Eliminate unwanted, non-practical on screen data
that clutters your screen and gets in the way of using your
unit to its maximum potential.
- Demo the unit for you to help you be familiar
with the screens and commands, so you’ll have a good
understanding of how to use the unit and take advantage of
its fish finding capabilities.
- If needed, install the most recent updates.
As a bonus Kick’n Bass will help you
learn to read an electronic topo map and find “places of
interest” that could be potential fishing hot spots.
